The story I decided to listen to this week was a bit interesting. In the story Seth Barnstein, a science writer for the associated press, talks a little bit about how there are doubters in the world today rejecting mainstream climate science. What this means is that there are people who don't believe in global warming and say that it is a hoax.
Physical: Most of the area where people are the most worried about are the polar ice caps. If they continue to melt the whole world will be covered by water. There are doubters saying that it is impossible and that it will never happen. They say climate science is a waste of time and they obviously reject it.
Psychological: People on both sides are getting upset obviously at each other. The supporters are getting upset with the doubters and vise versa. Seth goes on to say that he has been advised that he can't call the doubters "skeptics" or "climate change deniers" to sound more sophisticated.
Social: Seth plays a very important role writing the story and getting it put up on social media. This way people can respond to the situation and see what exactly is going on. Although there are many words he can use to describe the people against climate science, there were a few that were labeled as not usable. I found this to be a little odd.
Temporal: This is happening right now and has been going on since the beginning of time. They mentioned that it started way back in the story of Genesis in the bible. There have always been people who don't get along and agree with one another.
Cultural:This is a world wide thing. It is not only in one part of the world. Climate science affects all of us whether we like it or not. The people who reject climate science and those who don't are all affected.
As I was listening to the story I was thinking to myself, "how do people reject mainstream climate science." We are all affected by it so I don't understand why people reject it and say it's not true. I am with the supporters who say global warming is going on. Ice melts over time, but I doubt it will ever get to the point where there is no more land on the Earth. There will always be people who agree and disagree with an idea, this being a perfect example of one.
I honestly have never really paid much attention to climate change, but reading this actually shared some interesting insight.
ReplyDeletePerhaps a more ubiquitous term can be coined, "reality deniers."
